The United States men's ice hockey team has defeated Belarus 8-1 to clinch the top seed in Group-D heading into quarterfinal play.

After Belarus scored the first goal of Monday's match, the United States answered with eight scores to send Belarus to its third straight loss in group play. The American offense dominated the match, out-shooting Belarus 47-13.

The American won two games and tied one in group play, while Finland took second place after defeating Russia 3-1. Russia ended up third in Group-D Followed by Belarus.

In other matches, Sweden can lock up the top seed in Group-C with a win over Germany, while the Czech Republic plays Canada. Seedings are important, because the top seed in Group-D will play the bottom ranked team in Group-C when quarterfinal play begins Wednesday.

The women's ice hockey tournament resumes Tuesday with semifinal play. The United States and Canada are on course for another meeting in the gold medal match.
