British troops have invaded Spain -- by mistake.

About 20 Royal Marines brandishing guns disembarked on Spanish soil Monday, in the resort town of La Linea, and began conducting military exercises.

That is, until two local policemen informed the soldiers they were on Spanish soil, rather than British-controlled Gibraltar a bit further down the coast. A map-reading error was to blame.

The embarrassment comes at a delicate time for the two nations, who are negotiating for co-sovereignty of the British outpost.

The German news service reports Britain's Ministry of Defense has apologized to the mayor of La Linea.

Some information for this report provided by DPA.
