The wife of a jailed Chinese democracy activist says she has asked U.S. President George W. Bush to call for his release when he meets China's leaders later this week.

In an open letter to Mr. Bush, He Xintong says she fears that her 59-year-old husband Xu Wenli may die soon in prison. He is said to suffer from a number of ailments, including hepatitis B, arthritis and severe dental problems.

She tells the Associated Press that Chinese authorities have failed to give her husband adequate medical attention.

Xu Wenli was sentenced in 1998 to 13 years in prison on subversion charges for co-founding the opposition China Democracy Party.
