Third seed Marat Safin and Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, the fifth-seed, have won opening round matches in the ABN Amro tennis tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Safin beat Slovakia's Cominik Hrbaty Tuesday, 7-6 and 7-6. The fifth-seed Johansson attacked the serve of Morocco's Hicham Arazi with strong returns and groundstrokes to win, 6-4, 6-4.
Second-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov will play a first round match today against France's Julien Boutter. Kafelnikov won the title in 1999.
