Spanish police are blaming the Basque terrorist group ETA for a bombing that injured two people, including a prominent local politician, in a northern Spanish town.
Authorities say a bomb exploded under a car driven by Socialist Party politician Eduardo Madina Munoz Tuesday in the Basque town of Sestao.
Officials say Mr. Madina, a regional leader of the Socialist Party's youth wing, is in serious condition at a local hospital and doctors amputated his left leg. However, his injuries are not considered life-threatening. An unidentified person who was also in the car at the time of the blast was slightly injured.
The car bombing coincides with a meeting of government and opposition leaders Tuesday in Madrid to discuss new, tougher anti-terrorist measures.
ETA has staged frequent and deadly attacks against in its 33-year campaign for creation of an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France. The attacks have cost more than 800 lives.
