Israeli police say they have foiled a Palestinian suicide attack on a military base in northern Israel.

Israeli officials say traffic police officers stopped a car, suspected of being stolen, late Sunday, as it was heading toward an army base near the city of Hadera. One of the men inside jumped out of the vehicle, threw what appeared to be a small bomb, and opened fire. Police shot him dead.

The driver of the vehicle sped off, drawing gunfire from police who gave chase. Police said the driver then blew up the vehicle and himself.

. A militant Palestinian group calling itself the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attempted attack. The group is linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

Raanan Gissin, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon later warned that Israel will what do whatever is necessary to stop terrorist activity.
