NATO Secretary General George Robertson said Thursday his organization must not focus only on enlargement but also must transform to meet future challenges.

Mr. Robertson made his comments in Warsaw, where he praised Poland for being a solid NATO partner.

The secretary general said it is important for NATO members to focus on new challenges and not on past enemies. He stressed the need for modernizing the alliance's capabilities to deal with new threats, especially following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

Mr. Robertson congratulated Poland on two medals it has won in the Winter Olympic Games, and he said Poland deserved a gold metal for being a good and solid NATO ally.

Poland is one of three former east European communist countries that joined the alliance in 1999, despite Russian criticism about the eastwards expansion of NATO towards Russia's borders.
