The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has removed six Yemeni men from a terrorism alert list it issued Monday because they are already in custody in Yemen or elsewhere.
But FBI officials say a world-wide manhunt is continuing for the 11 other listed suspects who are believed to be plotting terrorist attacks in the United States or against U.S. interests in Yemen.
The suspected ring-leader, Yemeni citizen Fawaz Yahya al-Rabeei, is among those still being sought.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reports a 30-year old Palestinian man is believed to have become the new chief of operations for the al-Qaida terrorist network. According to the newspaper report, U.S. investigators are convinced that Abu Zubaydah - a top associate of Osama bin Laden since the late 1990s - is trying to activate al-Qaida sleeper cells for new attacks.
The Times report says Abu Zubaydah has taken over the job of Muhammad Atef, who is believed to have died in a U.S. bombing raid in Afghanistan in November.
