A U.S. non-governmental organization has released alleged secret Chinese documents indicating Beijing's intent to crush unauthorized religions.
The Center for Religious Freedom in Washington released the documents, issued from 1999 to 2001, and is urging President Bush to speak out forcefully for religious freedom when he visits China next week.
The documents include a Ministry of Public Security notice outlining how police can classify religious groups as banned cults, seize their assets and meeting houses, and charge their organizers as criminals.
The notice names seven groups as cults, including the Korean-based Unification Church headed by Sun Myung Moon. Other documents include recommendations for infiltrating underground Catholic congregations, other Christian sects, and the Falun Gong spiritual movement.
