Stocks Down in Tokyo

The U.S. dollar rose against the yen Friday afternoon, while prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed lower.
At mid-afternoon in Tokyo, the dollar was trading at 133.02 yen, up 0.56 yen from Thursday afternoon and above its late New York level of 132.04 yen.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange's Nikkei Average slipped 33 points to finish at 10,048 points. On Thursday, the average gained 113 points (1 percent).
In Hong Kong, the price of gold fell $2.62 to close at $300.12 an ounce. The market was closed Tuesday through Thursday for the Lunar New Year holidays.
