U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer
Abraham is recommending that all of the country's nuclear waste be stored
at a new site deep underground at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, 90 miles from
Las Vegas.
Mr. Abraham delivered his
recommendation to the White House Thursday. President Bush is expected
to make a final decision as early as Friday.
Mr. Abraham says one central
disposal site for nuclear waste would be safer from attack and from accidents
than the present arrangement. Nuclear waste is now stored at more than
100 sites around the country.
Nevada politicians have spoken
out strongly against the idea, arguing that the radioactive material presents
a health risk for residents of the state.
If the Nevada challenges
the decision, it will be up to the U.S. Congress to decide the issue.
