U.S. stocks continued to fall in midday trading.
The Dow Jones Industrial average was down 35 points at 9,967, while the broad market indicator - the S&P 500 - was down 7 points at 1,109. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was 25 points (more than 1 percent) lower at 1,819.
European share prices remain lower in late trading. In London, the Financial Times Index was down 15 points at 5,194, while in Paris, the CAC-40 was down 41 points (nearly 1 percent) at 4,388. The Dax in Frankfurt was 78 points (1.6 percent) lower at 4,896.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 33 points to close at 10,048, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index picked up 129 points (more than 1 percent) to end the day at 10,962.
The price of gold closed in London at $299.85 an ounce, up 85 cents.
The dollar was posting mixed results against the other major currencies.
