U.S. forces in Afghanistan say they have detained seven people after an attack on a U.S. base in Kandahar, but three others were seen leaving the area in a vehicle.
No casualties were reported on either side in the firefight. An Army spokesman says Apache helicopter gunships were sent out to search for the assailants on the perimeter of the base, which also includes a detention center for al-Qaida and Taleban prisoners. He says the situation has been secured and everything is back to normal Earlier Wednesday, a U.S. Air Force cargo plane crashed in a remote region of Afghanistan, injuring the eight crew members on board.
The U.S. Central Command - which directs the war in Afghanistan - says the cause of the crash is not yet known, but it does not appear to be the result of hostile fire.
A statement from the Command says all of the eight crew members survived the crash and that their injuries are not life-threatening.
In Washington, the White House says President Bush will meet with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan later Wednesday to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and other issues.
