The United States is moving
ahead with a World Trade Organization case in a dispute over access to
Mexico's telecommunications market.
U.S. Trade Representative
Robert Zoellick said Wednesday that the United States has decided to revive
its request for a WTO dispute settlement panel because efforts to resolve
the issue bilaterally had failed.
The United States alleges
that Mexico places unfair restrictions on foreign companies doing business
in a market dominated by a single company. It says U.S. telecommunicatiuons
carriers are forced to pay inflated charges.
Mr. Zoellick says Mexico
has failed to open its cross-border telecommunications market as required
under WTO rules.
