The president of the International Skating Union has confirmed allegations against some of the figure skating judges at the Winter Olympics.
The furor over Monday night's decision in pairs figure skating here continues to grow. Canada's Olympic delegation demanded an investigation into one of the most controversial decisions in the sport's history.
Russians Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze won the gold medal, edging Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier. But the Russians had a clear stumble in their routine, while the Canadians were nearly perfect. In fact, the crowd chanted, "six, six," begging the judges to award some perfect scores. They did not.
Ottavio Cinquanta, president of the International Skating Union addressed the media here Wednesday over the controversy. "First off, of course I was, and I am embarrassed, because of the presence of so many media representatives," he said. "It is self-explanatory. But I can tell you that I do not think I am in the presence of a condition of scandal."
Cinquanta added that it would be very difficult for the results of the competition to be changed. However, there is no specific rule on that, and he said the International Skating Union will meet here Monday to discuss the issues.
