Yemeni authorities say a suspected
al-Qaida member killed by a hand grenade explosion Wednesday was a relative
of one of the suspected hijackers who carried out the September 11 terrorist
attacks in the United States.
The man, identified
as 25-year-old Samir al-Hada, was being chased by security forces in a
suburb of the capital, Sanaa, late Wednesday when a grenade exploded in
his hand, killing him instantly. Yemeni police are quoted as saying Mr.
Hada had recently visited Afghanistan to receive terrorist training and
was involved in unspecified terrorist attacks.
The incident occurred
two days after the FBI in Washington issued a terrorist warning, saying
up to 17 men - believed led by a Yemeni national - were possibly planning
an attack in the United States, or against U.S. interests in Yemen. Mr.
Hada was not on that list.
The FBI warning identified
the possible ringleader as Fawaz Yahya al-Rabeei, a Yemeni citizen born
in 1979 in Saudi Arabia. For several weeks Yemen's security forces have
been looking for a number of fugitive Islamic militants with links to the
al-Qaida terrorist organization.
