Bente Skari of Norway has relied on a powerful finishing kick to capture the gold medal in the women's 10-kilometer Olympics cross-country classical race at the hilly Soldier Hollow venue.
The 29-year-old three-time world champion from Norway prevented a podium sweep by Russian competitors Tuesday, crossing the line in 28:05.6. It was Norway's first ever individual Olympic gold medal in women's cross-country skiing.
Olga Danilova of Russia earned the silver medal just 2.5 seconds back, and Julija Tchepalova took the bronze (28:09.9).
Fifteen-kilometer freestyle silver medalist Larissa Lazutina of Russia, was fourth. Stefania Belmondo of Italy who won the gold in the 15-kilometer race event placed fifth.
