France's Carole Montillet has won the gold medal in the women's Olympic downhill at Salt Lake City.
Montillet won the alpine event with a time of one minute and 39.56 seconds. Italian Isolde Kostner took the silver and Renate Ghoetschl of Austria won the bronze.
In the 15-kilometer men's cross-country ski race, Andrus Veerpalu won Estonia its first gold medal in Winter Olympic history with a time of just over 37 minutes. Fronde Estil of Norway won the silver, and another Estonian, Jaak Mae took the bronze.
Earlier Tuesday, mogul skier Janne Lahtella won Finland's second gold medal at the Salt Lake City games by winning the men's mogul event. Travis Mayer of the United States won the silver and Richard Gay of France took the bronze.
Also Tuesday, Benti Skar of Norway captured the women's 10 kilometer classical cross country race, 2.5 seconds ahead of silver medalist Olga Danilova of Russia. Julija Tchepalova of Russia took the bronze.
Medals are scheduled to be awarded later Tuesday in men's 500 meters speedskating.
Monday, the United States swept all three medals in the men's snowboard halfpipe at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, while Russia continued its domination of pairs figure skating.
Monday's U.S. sweep was the first time since 1956 that the United States has won gold, silver and bronze medals for a single winter Olympics event. Ross Powers won the gold, Danny Kass took the silver, and Jarret Thomas the bronze.
Meanwhile, Russia kept up its gold medal monopoly of the Olympic pairs figure skating event with a victory by Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada took the silver medal, while Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China won the bronze. Soviet and Russian pairs have won 11 straight gold medals in the event, dating back to 1964.
