A former student claiming to have a bomb has taken 18 people hostage at Fairfield University in the northeastern U.S. state of Connecticut.

A school spokeswoman says the suspect took over a religious studies classroom at the Catholic university late Tuesday.

Police are in contact with the suspect, whose identity has not been released. Police say the suspect released five people, leaving 17 students and a professor in the second-floor classroom. There are no reports of injuries.

The university of about 5,000 students is located about 20 miles from the border of New York state.
