The United States Air Force has placed an order for 13 F-22 Raptor warplanes with U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
The weapons manufacturing giant announced the $2.7 billion contract late Tuesday. Lockheed Martin and U.S. defense contractor Boeing have been developing the F-22 to be the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.
The Reuters news agency says the planes will start being delivered by the end of 2004.
