Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai reportedly was stopped by government security officials and accused of carrying false documents Tuesday.
Movement for Democratic Change party spokesman Learnmore Jongwe says Mr. Tsvangirai was detained for about 20 minutes at the International Airport in the capital, Harare. Mr. Jongwe said the opposition leader was returning from a trip to South Africa when officials stopped him. Mr. Tsvangirai was released after he was able to produce his passport.
Mr. Tsvangirai will face President Robert Mugabe in presidential elections next month. Political analysts say the opposition leader presents the biggest challenge yet to the president's 20-year rule in Zimbabwe. Political violence has escalated in the country in recent weeks.
