U.S. stocks are higher in early trading - after a report showing surprising overall strength in retail sales increased optimism the economy may be rebounding.
The Dow Jones Industrial average is up 32 points at 9,896, while the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, is up three points at 1,111. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is 14 points higher at 1,849.
In London, the Financial Times Index is up 19 points at 5,155, while in Paris the CAC 40 Index is up eight points at 4,346. The Dax Index in Frankfurt is 20 points higher at 4,905.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index rose 90 points (nearly one percent) to close at 9,968. Markets were closed in Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year's Holiday.
The price of gold in London is $298.60 an ounce - down 30 cents.
The dollar has turned higher against the other major currencies.
