Asian Markets Close Higher

Most Asian stock markets closed higher Wednesday, with the key market in Tokyo climbing for a fourth straight session. Several markets remained closed for Chinese New Year holidays.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained nearly 1 percent (90 points), to close at 9,968. The Nikkei rose nearly 2 percent Tuesday.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Manila, Wellington and Bombay. Markets registered losses in Jakarta and Sydney.

Financial markets were closed in Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.18 yen in Tokyo, down 0.44 yen from late Tuesday in Tokyo, but above its late Tuesday New York level of 132.49 yen.
