Georg Hackl of Germany has failed in his bid to become the first Winter Olympian to win four straight gold medals in the same event, after finishing second to Armin Zoeggeler of Italy in men's luge at Utah Olympic Park.
Zoeggeler finished his four luge runs in a time of two minutes and 57.941 seconds on Monday, about one-third of a second faster than Hackl. Markus Prock of Austria, a 10-time World Cup champion, won the bronze in 2:58.283.
Hackl will be able to take consolation in making a different kind of history. His silver medal makes him first Olympic athlete, summer or winter, to medal in the same individual event at five consecutive Games. The German has said that Salt Lake City will be his final Games.
Women's Biathlon
Andrea Henkel of Germany has upset favored Liv Grete Poiree of Norway and Magdalena Forsberg of Sweden to win the gold medal in the women's 15-kilometer individual biathlon.
The four-time world junior champion Henkel combined excellent shooting and cross-country skiing Monday to finish in 47 minutes and 29.1 seconds. That was 7.9 seconds faster than Poiree, who also had one miss in the shooting.
Forsberg is the most successful biathlete in history with 12 world championship medals, but had to settle for the bronze medal on Monday. She had two misses at the last shooting station, which cost her a two-minute penalty.
Other medals were to be awarded later Monday in the men's 20-kilometer individual biathlon, men's snowboard halfpipe, men's 500-meter speedskating and pairs figure skating.
