U.S. stocks remain lower in afternoon trading after telephone equipment maker Nortel Networks said meeting its first quarter sales target will be challenging. The news again raised investor concern over corporate profits in general.
The Dow Jones Industrial average is down 41 points at 9,844, while the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, is down six points at 1,106. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is 20 points (nearly one percent) lower at 1,827.
In London, the Financial Times Index ended the day down 26 points at 5,136, while in Paris the CAC 40 was down 15 points at 4,338. The DAX in Frankfurt is 76 points (1.5 percent) lower at 4,864.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index rose 192 points to close at 9,878. Markets were closed in Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year's Holiday.
The price of gold closed in London at $299.70 an ounce, up 90 cents.
The dollar remains mostly lower against the other major currencies.
