A Russian military spokesman says two servicemen in the Baltic coast guard deserted their military unit in Kaliningrad early Tuesday.

Officials say the two men took pistols and ammunition with them.

Search operations are being conducted on the region's border with Lithuania.

The overnight desertion comes a week after two soldiers armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles deserted their unit in central Russia and gunned down nine people before being shot and killed.
