Asian stock markets closed mixed Tuesday, with the key market in Tokyo higher while many smaller markets were closed for the Chinese New Year holiday.
Tokyo's Nikkei index gained nearly 2 percent (192 points), to close at 9,878. The Nikkei gained 1 percent on its last trading day, Friday.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Sydney and Manila, and lower in Wellington, Bangkok and Bombay. Financial markets were closed in Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.62 yen in Tokyo, down fractionally from late Friday in Tokyo, but above its late Monday New York level of 133.51 yen.
