Authorities in South Africa say a man has shot and killed at least 11 people before turning the gun on himself after being rejected by his girlfriend.

Police say the murder-suicide occurred late Saturday in the township of East London, 900 kilometers east of Cape Town. At least seven others were wounded in the shooting rampage, two of whom remain in intensive care today (Sunday).

Police say the man killed his girlfriend at her residence, then drove to a house belonging to her family and killed three of her relatives. Authorities say the gunman next drove to a public area and began randomly shooting strangers before turning the nine-millimeter pistol on himself.

South Africa has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime.
