Olympics: Austria's Fritz Strobl Wins Downhill Gold

Fritz Strobl has upset fellow-Austrian Stephan Eberharter to capture the gold medal in the men's downhill ski event at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Strobl was the 10th of 55 skiers to go down the hill at the Snowbasin venue Sunday. He completed the course in one minute and 39.13 seconds, to win the first gold medal of the Games for Austria.

Norway's Lasse Kjus took the silver medal, 0.22 second, while Eberharter captured the bronze, 0.28 second off the winning time.

Ski Jumping

Simon Ammann of Switzerland has pulled off a major upset by winning the Olympic gold medal in the K-90 ski-jumping event held in Park City, Utah.

The 20-year-old recorded leaps of 98 and 98.5 meters Sunday, to surprise favored Sven Hannawald of Germany with an aggregate score of 269 points. Prior to today's gold medal, Ammann's best finish at a major event was 26th at the 1999 Nordic worlds.

Hannawald, who won all four events in the prestigious Four Hills series of meets earlier this year and leads the World Cup standings, had to settle for a silver medal with jumps of 97 and 99 meters for 267.5 points.

Adam Malysz of Poland recorded jumps of 98.5 and 98 meter meters to pick up the bronze medal with 263 points.
