Eurotunnel, the operator of the Channel Tunnel rail link between Britain and France, says losses last year widened to $187 million. The London-based company said asylum seekers disrupted traffic in the tunnel and revenues for laying telecommunications cables dropped.
In an interview, Eurotunnel's Chief Executive Richard Shirrefs said the company is irritated, saying the French and British governments have left it up to his company to solve the problem of asylum-seekers who try to enter Britain through the tunnel. Earnings were also hurt by the economic slowdown in Europe, which hurt demand for travel.
