American Tennis Stars Advance at Paris Open

Americans Venus Williams and Monica Seles have advanced to the semifinals of the Paris Open indoor tennis tournament in France.

The fifth-seeded Seles upset number-two Justine Henin of Belgium 6-4, 6-3 in their quarterfinal match Friday. Seles will meet Jelena Dokic in the round-of-four, after the fourth-seeded Yugoslavian came back from a loss in the first set to beat number-eight Elena Dementieva of Russia, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Top-seeded Venus Williams of the United States also moved into the semifinal round. She scored an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over number seven Silvia Farina Elia of Italy. The American will play defending champion Amelie Mauresmo for a place in the final, after the Frenchwoman defeated Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2, 6-2.
