American golf star Tiger Woods had to make a putt from nearly two meters on the 18th hole Friday just to make the cut at the Buick Invitational in San Diego, California, while non-stars JL Lewis and Kent Jones grabbed a one-stroke lead.
Lewis, who has one career win, and Jones, with none, carded 5-under-par 67s for a two-round total of nine-under (135), one shot better than a trio of golfers.
World number-one golfer Woods slumped with a 5-over-par 77 after an opening round of 66 Thursday, leaving him at one-under (143) midway through the event. Meanwhile, twice defending champion Phil Mickelson, ranked number two in the world, fared even worse. He missed the cut in his hometown with a two-round total of 4 over par (148).
One shot off the lead heading into the third round Saturday are Americans Jay Haas and Mark O'Meara, along with Rory Sabbatini of South Africa.
