Japanese Share Prices Close Mixed

Asian stock markets closed mixed Wednesday, despite losses in the region's two largest markets, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell a fraction of 1 percent (55 points), to close at 9,420 - the Nikkei's lowest finish in more than 18 years. The index fell more than 1 percent Tuesday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell a fraction of 1 percent (16 points) in light trading, to finish at 10,592. The Hang Seng fell 1 percent Tuesday.
Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Sydney. Share prices were higher in Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Bombay. Financial markets were closed in Wellington for a holiday.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.92 yen in Tokyo, up 1.38 yen from late Tuesday in Tokyo, and also above its late Tuesday New York level of 133.86 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose $5.90, to close at $296.95 an ounce.
