A group of Commonwealth staff members has arrived in Zimbabwe to begin preparations for observing next month's presidential elections.
Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon released a statement Tuesday saying that, starting with this team, the Commonwealth will have people on the ground in Zimbabwe until the election has been concluded.
The Commonwealth advance team will meet with electoral officials, political parties and non-governmental organizations this week in Harare.
The first group of actual observers will be in Zimbabwe next Monday and the main group of observers will arrive later this month. The election is scheduled for March 9-10.
