The military division of Russia's Supreme Court has ruled Russian journalist Grigory Pasko must remain in jail while the court reviews his appeal case.

Pasko was sentenced in December to four years in prison on treason charges, and has already spent 20 months in jail.

He has appealed the court verdict, arguing the charges against him were in retaliation for his reporting on the Russian navy's dumping of nuclear waste into the Sea of Japan.

The conviction has caused an uproar both in Russia and abroad.
