Most Asian stock markets close lower
Most Asian stock markets closed lower Tuesday after Monday's U.S. stock losses on Wall Street, with the key market in Tokyo falling to its lowest point in 18 years.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell 1.6 percent (156 points), to close at 9,475. The Nikkei also fell 1.6 percent Monday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell one percent (112 points), to finish at 10,609. The Hang Seng rose slightly Monday.
Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Singapore, Taipei, Wellington and Manila. Markets also registered losses in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Bombay. Share prices were higher in Bangkok and Seoul.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 132.54 yen in Tokyo, down 0.85 yen from late Monday in Tokyo, but above above its late Monday New York level of 132.30 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose $4.50, to close at $291.05 an ounce.
