In Pakistan, visiting Deputy Treasury Secretary Kenneth Dam said the near global pursuit of terrorist money since September 11 has largely focused on direct terrorist assets. He said 147 countries have so far blocked about $80 million.
After meeting on Tuesday in Islamabad with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Mr. Dam said international efforts must now shift to charities that knowingly raise money for terrorist operations. He said in a few serious cases charities had helped to finance terrorism.
Mr. Dam also said governments must work more closely to share intelligence on terrorists and their money.
The U.S. official revealed that Washington is preparing another economic assistance package for the government of General Pervez Musharaff. The general visits Washington next week and details of the deal are expected to be released after General Musharraf meets with President Bush.
In November, the United States released $600 million in aid to Pakistan, and the International Monetary Fund followed with a $1.3 billion loan guarantee. The Paris Club then rescheduled more than $12 billion in Pakistani debt payments.
