Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit is urging Iraq to allow U.N. weapons inspectors into the country.
In a letter to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the Turkish leader warns that Iraq is facing what he calls "a new threat" and says Turkey is working hard to avoid the threat's possible consequences.
Mr. Ecevit's letter, released by his office in Ankara Monday, says Turkey's efforts will bring success, if Iraq takes urgent action by removing what Mr. Ecevit calls "obstacles" to U.N. weapons inspections.
President Bush has accused Iraq of being part of an "axis of evil." Baghdad has denied access to U.N. inspectors since they left Iraq in December of 1998.
The inspections were set up after the Persian Gulf War instigated by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
