U.S. stocks remain mixed in afternoon trading - as encouraging reports on the economy are offset by ontinuing concern over corporate bookkeeping in light of the Enron scandal.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 20 points at 9,707, but the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, is down one point at 1,094. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is four points lower at 1,851.
In London, the Financial Times Index ended the day down 74 points (1.4 percent) at 5,093, while in Paris the CAC 40 Index was down 90 points (more than two percent) at 4,308. The Dax Index in Frankfurt is 83 points (nearly two percent) lower at 4,902, in late trading.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 156 points (1.6 percent) to close at 9,476, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index lost 112 points (more than one percent) to end the day at 10,609.
The price of gold closed in London at $291.40 an ounce - up $4.60.
The dollar has turned mostly higher against the other major currencies.
