Soccer's world governing body, FIFA, says it will consider an appeal by Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert against a suspension that stops him from taking part in the first stage of the 2002 World Cup.

The FIFA Appeal Committee will meet Thursday to discuss Chilavert's request to slash a four-match international ban. The player was suspended by FIFA's disciplinary body in November. Paraguay's soccer association, which is appealing on Chilavert's behalf, is seeking to have the ban reduced to two games. Maintaining the four-match suspension would stop Chilavert playing in Paraguay's first two matches at the World Cup tournament, which begins in May in South Korea and Japan. Chilavert was banned for spitting on Brazilian Roberto Carlos during a World Cup South American group qualifier on August 15th, which Brazil won, 2-0. Chilavert says Carlos had insulted him, but the Brazilian player says he was only trying to greet Chilavert. The two had been provoking each other throughout the game.
