The Salt Lake Winter Olympics experienced its first bomb scare Monday after a suspicious package found on a roadside forced the closure of a main highway leading to one of the venues.
The Olympic Public Safety Command Joint Information Center, which helps oversee security at the Games, said the package was found at the side of the I-15 highway. The package was deemed to be harmless.
The highway links Salt Lake City to the city of Ogden, home of the curling venue and enroute to the Snowbasin resort, where some of the alpine skiing events will be held.
Security at the Games is extremely high involving some 15,000 officials.
