US Stocks Lower in Early Trading

U.S. stocks were lower in early trading Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial average was down 63 points at 9,845, while the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, was down 9 points at 1,113. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was 12 points lower at 1,899.

In London, the Financial Times Index was down 20 points at 5,170, while in Paris the CAC 40 was down 47 points (more than 1 percent) at 4,409. The Dax in Frankfurt was 60 points (more than 1 percent) lower at 5,036.

Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 160 points (1.6 percent) to close at 9,632, but Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index picked up 30 points to end the day at 10,721.

The price of gold in London was $285.80 an ounce, up $1.90.

The dollar was mostly higher against the other major currencies.
