Asian stock markets closed mostly lower Monday, with the key market in Tokyo slumping for the second straight session.

Tokyo's Nikkei index fell more than 1 percent (160 points), to close at 9,632. The Nikkei fell 2 percent on Friday.

Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, gained a fraction of 1 percent (30 points), to finish at 10,721. The Hang Seng slipped slightly Friday.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Wellington, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur. Markets closed lower in Singapore, Taipei, Manila, Seoul, Jakarta, Bangkok and Bombay

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.42 yen in Tokyo, down 0.52 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, and below its late Friday New York level of 133.43 yen.

The price of gold in Hong Kong rose 90 cents, to close at $286.55 an ounce.
