Italian qualifier Davide Sanguinetti has given the home fans plenty to cheer about by scoring a three-set win to reach the final of the Milan Indoor tennis tournament.
Sanguinetti, who has never won a major tournament in his career, overcame French Davis Cup hero Nicolas Escude in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. He faces the winner of a match between second seed and defending champion Roger Federer of Switzerland and Greg Rusedski of Britain.
The Italian beat top-seed Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round and fifth seed Younes El Ayanoui of Morocco in the quarterfinals.
The men's doubles team of American Rick Leach and South Africa's Ellis Ferreira has won the ATP World Doubles Challenge tournament in Bangalore, India.
Leach and Ferreira scored a three-set win over the fourth-seeded Czech team of Pavel Vizner and Petr Pala 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
Leach and Ferreira this year reached the semifinals in Auckland and quarterfinals at last month's Australian Open. In 2001 they won back-to-back titles in Basel and at TMS Paris. Since teaming up, Leach and Ferreira have won eight titles, including the 2000 Australian Open and three Tennis Masters Series tournaments.
