Russian Svetlana Feofanova has set a new women's indoor pole vault world record at a meet in Stuttgart, Germany.

Often placing second to American Stacy Dragila, Feofanova broke her rival's world record Sunday in the indoor pole vault with a leap of 4.71 meters. Feofanova cleared the bar by several centimeters on her third attempt as she bettered the mark of 4.70 held by Dragila. Feofanova, 21, finished second at the Goodwill Games to Dragila. At the 1999 world championships, she again had to settle for the silver medal when the American cleared the same height with one less miss. Dragila still holds the outdoor world record of 4.81 meters. Last week, Feofanova set a new European indoor mark of 4.66 meters.

Another record was also set at the meet Sunday. Berhande Adere of Ethiopia set a world record in the women's 3,000 meter race with a time of 8 minutes 29.15 seconds. She snapped the old mark set last year by Romanian Gabrieal Szabo by 3.73 seconds.
