Algeria's official news agency says suspected Islamic rebels have shot dead 11 people and wounded nine others near the city of Medea, about 80 kilometers south of Algiers.
The reported killings took place late Saturday.
The country's Armed Islamic Group is known to operate in that area, frequently setting up road blocks and attacking civilians.
Another attack was reported Saturday in which two people were killed and several wounded in nearby Blida.
Algeria has been torn by violence since early 1992 when authorities canceled a general election that Islamic radicals were poised to win.
