Italian Davide Sanguinetti has scored a surprising upset victory over defending champion Roger Federer of Switzerland to capture his first career Association of Tennis Professionals Tour title.

Sanguinetti, 29, defeated the 20-year-old Swiss, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, in the final Sunday of the Milan Indoor tennis tournament. Sanguinetti was a surprise finalist following a second-round upset of top-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and a quarterfinal victory over fifth-seeded Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco.

Sanguinetti, coming from a first-round loss in the Australian Open, served eight aces and had three double faults in the final match as he improved his 2002 won-lost record to 5-1. Federer's record this year drops to 12-2.

Sanguinetti, ranked 87th in the ATP entry system, became the second Italian winner of the Milan Indoors, ten years after Omar Camporese. Federer, ranked 13th, fell short in his bid to win his second ATP title of the year, after Sydney, and his second straight title in Milan.
