Russian military officials say their troops seized a cache of thousands of weapons from rebels in Chechnya Saturday.
Russian news media say raids took place in the villages of Novye Atagy and Starye Atagy, south of Grozny ,the Chechen capital. They say Russian soldiers arrested a group of rebels and seized an arsenal of grenade launchers, mines, guns and mortars.
One report by Novosti says more than 100,000 weapons were seized at the rebels' hideout.
Thousands of Russian troops as well as Chechen rebels and civilians have been killed since Russian forces swept into the southern Russian republic in October, 1999.
