More than 20 Muslim rebels were killed Friday in a raid by government troops on their jungle hideout on the southern island of Jolo.

Local army commander Brigadier General Romeo Tolentino said the raid took place in the village of Batu Putih, about 1,000 kilometers south of Manila.

The general said members of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap gang were backed up by followers of Muslim leader Nur Misuari, who is in jail after an aborted rebellion that killed 100 people in November.

General Tolentino said soldiers are continuing to pursue the rebels, with sporadic clashes reported in the last two days.
