Egypt's national soccer team has defeated Zambia, 2-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations tournament in Bamako, Mali.
The 1998 African champions scored a goal in each half with Ahmed Hossam finding the Zambian net in the 35th minute and Hazem Emam scoring eight minutes after halftime. Zambia's only score came from a 76th minute goal from Gift Kampamba.
World Cup finalists Tunisia failed to make the final eight after playing Senegal to a scoreless draw in Kayes, Mali. The Tunisians finished third in their group behind Senegal and Egypt.
The victory means that Egypt will play Cameroon in the quarterfinals. Senegal takes on the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the other group quarterfinals Sunday, host country Mali plays South Africa and Ghana takes on Nigeria.
